Healthy Indoor Environments include humidifiers too!

Maintaining proper relative humidity (RH) conditions in your indoor environment can have a serious impact towards good indoor air quality. In many regions through out Colorado our climate is considered semi-arid and on average, outdoor relative humidity (RH) levels will range between 20-25% RH. During heating season months when your furnace is in constant operation the already dry air is dried out even more each and every time your furnace runs and relative humidity levels indoors can dip down to as low as 10% RH ranges easily. Healthy indoor relative humidity ranges are advised to be maintained between 30%-50% relative humidity (RH) and a whole home humidifier working with your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system can allow you to maintain healthy RH for your entire home and or structure.

Benefits a whole home humidifier may provide.

  • Dry air produces more dust by creating static that attracts the manufacturing of dust through dead skin cells that acts as an adhesive to dander, dirt, biological matter, mold spores and various other fine particulate matter. RH levels at 30-50% will drastically reduce or completely eliminate static. Eliminating a significant static presence in your indoor environment will reduce dust from being manufactured sooner, which means dust build up takes longer to occur.
  • Providing enough humidity in your indoor environment can help to relieve sinus pressure, ask your doctor.
  • Providing enough humidity in your indoor environment can combat against dry skin and nose bleeds, ask your doctor.
  • Providing enough humidity in your indoor environment is excellent for hardwood floors and nice wood furnishings.
  • Dry air requires higher thermostat settings to make you feel comfortable, where as air that has the proper RH levels will allow you to turn your thermostat down a degree or two to allow you to feel the same comfort at a lower temperature, which in turn can allow you to save money on your energy bill.
  • As an interesting side benefit, some house plants will respond positively to increased humidity levels versus very dry air.
  • Less expensive and time consuming than operating several room humidifiers (having to constantly fill a room humidifier up with water takes time, where as automatic water feed does not).

Many furnace and air conditioner manufacturers use Aprilaire products and paint them to match their product line and slap a logo sticker to complement their furnace and or air conditioning systems in appearance and superior performance.

Note: Humidifier sizing will change per region due to several Psychrometric factors such as varying due points, wet bulb temperatures, dry bulb temperatures, relative humidity (RH), humidity ratio or grains of moisture per pound, specific volume (or displacement of air) sometimes effected by elevation and enthalpy to mention a few factors.

Psychrometric chart readings will differ in different climate regions. Our average sizing reflects what is typically needed for the Rocky Mountain region, however different construction factors of your home can change sizing as well. It is always best to consult with a licensed professional HVAC company such as Lucky Duct to size your humidifier correctly for your unique indoor environment.
